Off to South America on Tuesday, what's going on down there besides enjoying the white stuff that's not falling yet up here?
I'm headed down to South America to satisfy the addiction. Skiing is like crack, but more expensive.
Where exactly are you going?
Termas de Chillán, Chile and Las Lenas, Argentina.
Do you listen to music while you ski?
I listen to music when I'm skiing by myself at Squaw. Skiing is too social of a sport to have headphones on when you're shredding around with buddies. I also will sometimes put some music on during a long skin or burly bootpack. Gets the hike into a good rhythm and takes my mind off the suffering.
You use a Mac, does that also mean you use iTunes and have an iPod?
30g iPod and an iPod Shuffle for skiing. Not worth risking the $300 ripping around with a 30g iPod.
How does music play into your skiing?
Music and skiing go together like peanut butter and ladies.
Are there certain songs to get amped with or songs that relate to certain days or runs?
I pretty much always end up blaring "Angel of Death" by
Slayer when I am getting psyched for a ski day. I think that even a nun would get amped to that song.
How much influence do you have on what song will be used for your section of a ski movie?
Zero to none. It's a myth that skiers get to pick their songs. I think that's why skiers start their own production companies, just to pick out their own music.
What production companies did you work with this last season?
Warren Miller and Wink Inc. I put some time into competing last season and couldn't film as much as I would have wanted to. But I did pretty well in the comps, so I'm not complaining.
What production companies are you planning on working with this coming season?
No idea. Probably MSP again, but I will also be competing in the Red Bull Cold Rush, Big Mountain Pro and Verbier Extreme.
Favorite ski movie of all time?
My favorite ski movie of all time is either MSP's "Sick Sense" or Warren Miller's "Ski Country." I was 3 years old when I saw "Ski Country". My favorite section was watching Scot Schmidt shred Squaw Valley in a way that would be impressive in any current flick. I watched that movie from 3 years old until I was 15. Then when I was 15 I saw "Sick Sense" and it was like a f#%king slap in the face. After being a racer kid for so long, I saw that movie and thought to myself, "That is way f#%king cooler than ski racing. I want to do THAT when I grow up."
Last song that was stuck in your head?
"¡¡¡It's the Eye of Tiger, it's the cream of the fight, Risin up to the challenge of our rival!!!" (Eye of the Tiger,
Survivor)
Last song you bought?
"Must Be a Devil" by
Diplo
Last album you bought?
Neon Bible, by
Arcade Fire
Last concert you went to?
Beastie Boys last weekend at the Warfield in San Fran.
What CD/Tape is in your car stereo right now?
Usually rock the Sirius Radio on the Punk channel or on Hard Attack (Heavy Metal channel).
Now the loaded questions which are impossible to answer...
All time favorite song?
"Master of Puppets",
Metallica
Favorite artist?
Metallica. Although they are so lame now, they started it all for me. My first love in music. And everything from the
Black Album and earlier is a musical masterpiece.
Favorite album?
Master of Puppets, Metallica.
Best new band?
Lamb of God. Out of loads of crappy new metal, these guys have emerged as the by far the best metal band today.
Best old band?
Slayer.
Top 25 most played songs on your iTunes?
An explanation of my Top 25: Although I'm a punk and metal head, I am a student and always end up studying and writing papers late into the night. I love to listen to chill hip-hop, trip-hop and some lounge music when I'm doing school work. As you can see by the play counts and by the time last played column, I have tons of homework and work very late into the night. All nighters are commonplace in my room.
So the Top 25 doesn't exactly represent who I am musically, just more what I listen to while working.
Last comments?
Where has all the metal and punk gone?!?! I like a lot of the new music in ski movies these days, but come on ski movie makers. Nothing gets us more amped than watching Seth Morrison punch a 100 foot backy with Slipknot playing at 120 decibels. I miss that spine-tingling, all-out psyched feeling I used to get as a youngin' watching ski movies. Give us something hard!
