August 21, 2008

What are you up to these days?
Last couple of weeks I've been super busy getting my Fall 2008 orders organized and shipped for my hat company Discrete.   www.discreteheadwear.com   Other than that, I've gone on little trips to Hollywood to see friends, San Diego, Venice.   Checked out Boulder and Denver, oh and just last week I went out to Tahoe to participate in a fundraiser where a bunch of us paddle boarded across Lake Tahoe !!   22 miles !!   Check it out on my blog:   www.juliancarr.com

Any big plans for the coming season?
I am just hoping for a big winter that will enable me to start thinking that way.

Tell us what Discrete Headwear is all about.
Discrete is the first ski-born headwear/clothing company.   The ski world is seeing great things in companies like 4frnt, Armada, and a select other few.   In the realm of apparel I was always pretty turned off with all the loud obnoxious designs I'd see year after year.   So I created Discrete.   Our style is in simplicity allowing the perception of the individual foremost.

What inspired the homemade-handcrafted/spoken-word/ mc cuts on the Discrete site?
I've always been a fan of a really good instrumental beat.   I grew up with my dad being a poet - so I've always enjoyed the spoken word.   Combining these two elements was very attractive.   And a good way to get creative.

How is it managing the Discrete Headwear team?
It's awesome man.   Just today I got an email from CR Johnson - he was just saying what's up, checking in on the summer and requesting a few more beanies to hold him over til our new stuff comes out in a few months.   Stuff like that never gets old.

What do you do when your not skiing or making peoples heads happy?
I dinged my knee up mid-winter last year, so I am a physical therapy monkey.   And gym rat.   And mtn bike and road bike freak.   When I'm not hurt I like to go to the diving boards, skateboard, basketball, ping-pong, recreate in general, write, think, and romance.

Do you prefer:
          Resort or backcountry?
Both have their upsides for sure.   Some days you are ready to work and get some sick shots.   Some days you just want to shred with your boys are the resort and get some mileage.

Filming or competing?
I appreciate the process of filming.

Background noise or silence?
  Silence.

Beer or wine?
Neither.   Got to drink that Twiskey !!

Mexican or Chinese?
  Neither.   Fruits and Veggies.

Apple or PC?
  Silly question.

TV or movies?
  Movies.

What's the funniest thing that happened to you when you were learning to ski?
The first day I learned how to ski (I went with my mom - thanks mom!), when I fell I sucked so bad I couldn't even get up without a good 15 minute struggle.   I remember it vivdly.   Although by my 3 rd day skiing I had it down and got pulled over by Brighton patrol for going too fast.   Awesome.

Describe the perfect day of skiing.
Good friends, deep pow, stomp everything, lots of laughing.

Tell us about your best day filming for a ski movie.
Either in Engelberg with RAGE in 07, deep snow and big cliffs everywhere (jumped a 210 footer over there) or at Alta backcountry with Warren Miller in 08 with my good friend Rachael Burks - we were the only athletes and skied ridiculous powder for 2 days in a row.

What is your most memorable fuck-up during filming?
Last year with Warren Miller I hit a freegn tree skiing a pow turn and dinged my knee, thus taking me out for the remainder of the year.   Not rad.   Just taught me a lesson that you always have to concentrate - even when you are just skiing powder at Solitude filming with Warren Miller.

What was your personal favorite ski movie growing up, and your favorite segment?
            Seth Morrison in Global Storming.

Favorite non-skiing movie?
            Heat

What is the last concert you went to?
Can't remember - shit.   Love music, but don't go to concerts all that much.

If you had a soundtrack for your life what five songs would it definitely include and why?

  1. Sade - Smooth Operator
  2.
  3. Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
  4.
  5. Cat Stevens - Wild World
  6.
  7. Talib Kweli & Hi Tek - Move Somethin'
  8.
  9. Steely Dan - Peg
  10.

What's in your car stereo right now?
            Gravediggaz

What song was stuck in your head all day?
Hilarious song.   Don't know who it is, but it's pretty thuggy - it's this chick that keeps saying 'chicken noodle soup'   'Chicken noodle soup'   'chicken noodle soup'   'with a soda on the side'   and there is a super thugged out dude in the background going '!chicken!'   '!noodle!'     Way too awesome of a song. [Webstar & Young B - Chicken Noodle Soup]

Who is your most recent 'discovery' band wise?
            The Cool Kids

Do you have any musical talent?
Nope, and my pops is even a musician !!   Got ripped off.

Do you listen to music while you ski?
Only when I'm skiing resort non-gnarly.   I'm sponsored by Skullcandy, and they have all kinds of cool music listening devices to get amongst the music out there.   Stoked.

Last comments?
Keep your chest up, knees chopping, and head on a swivel !!!   And long live the MONGOOSE !!!
